Obituary of Walter J. Koperda, Jr.

Floyd – Walter J. Koperda, 75, passed away surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his daughter’s home, on April 3, 2022, while under the care of Hospice. Walter, affectionately known as “Snowman” was born on September 21, 1946 in Utica, a son of Walter J. Sr., and Rose Mary Brown Koperda. He received his education at New Hartford High School. Walter was a lifelong and talented auto mechanic, beginning his career at Carbone Auto Dealerships on Commercial Drive. On June 28, 1968, Walter was united in marriage with Mary LaDue in Marcy, New York, and the couple settled in Deerfield where they resided for many years. Walter owned his own auto shop in Vernon for several years, Koperda’s Towing and Salvage. He had a love and passion for stock car racing and got his start at Utica-Rome Speedway, a place he had fond memories of. Gaining notoriety and success he was known at Fonda Motor Speedway as the “Polish Prince” driving the #02 late model car he set track records with for fastest laps ran. He also ran in the 21W modified division. Walter is survived by his daughter Lauralee Koperda (Kirk Jeffers), son Walter J. Koperda, III, son from a previous marriage; Shane Koperda; Lakeland, FLA, his former wife Mary Koperda, all of Floyd, his grandchildren: Gage Dunn, Hunter Tarbania, Cassidy Tarbania, and Eden Koperda, sisters: Kathy (Smokey) Schmelzle, Diane (Dale) White, and brother Danny (Annie) Koperda, all of Forestport, several nieces and nephews and a special canine companion Samson. He was predeceased by his parents and one sister Katherine Brown. In keeping with his wishes there will be no calling hours. Burial at the convenience of his family will take place in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Utica. A Celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Memorial contributions may be directed to his family to assist with final expenses.
