Obituary of Ian Harris Boyd

Ian Harris Boyd, 44, of Boonville, formerly of Rome, passed away in comfort and peace on Monday, November 29, 2021 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Utica from complications of Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. He was born on April 5, 1977 at Rome Memorial Hospital, a son of Gary Boyd and Sheila Harris. Ian had a drive for independence, and was well known for his resourcefulness, mischievous tendencies, and a sly sense of humor. He attended Rome City Schools, graduating from Rome Free Academy in 1998 with an I.E.P. diploma. He also attended A.R.C. and U.C.P. Day programs. Always enthusiastic and sometimes strong willed, Ian enjoyed being in the Special Olympics and bowling. He also enjoyed time with his family, getting dressed up and dining out. He had many friends in the area, enjoyed having visitors, and had a great love of music. Ian’s love of outings and the community provided the inspiration for the creation of the project to increase accessibility in the Oneida, Lewis and Herkimer counties before the passage with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ian is survived by his parents, Gary Boyd and Sheila Harris; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jesse and Heather Boyd of Nebraska, and Colin Boyd of Vermont; a niece, Jillian Boyd of Missouri; a nephew, Seamus Boyd of Nebraska; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Ken and Jewel Boyd, and Earl and Helen Harris. Ian’s family wishes to express their appreciation to the many caregivers who helped Ian throughout the years. The family’s deepest gratitude goes to his caregiving aides and managers at Upstate Cerebral Palsy and to the nursing and medical staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital during his last days.
