William G. Countryman

March 2, 1939 — August 5, 2024

Rome – William G. Countryman, 85, husband of Carol, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024, at Rome Memorial Hospital, where he was surrounded by the loving care of his family.


William was born in Ogdensburg, on March 2, 1939, a son of Lawrence and Leona Gilbert Countryman. He moved to Rome with his family, where he received his education, graduating from Rome Free Academy, with the Class of 1957.


On March 28, 1980, Bill was united in marriage with Carol A. Weeks.


After graduation, William began his long career in the banking business, at The Farmer’s Bank of Rome, and continuing to the positions of Bank Teller and Loan Officer with Marine Midland Bank, later advancing to assistant Vice President of HSBC Bank, retiring after 37 years of service.


Mr. Countryman was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Rome. He was an avid fisherman and greatly enjoyed taking his grandsons fishing. Bill enjoyed the sport of Bocce and playing with his cherished friends, Lynn Opper and Dean Austin, in the Tuesday Night League, at Toccolana Italian Bocce Club, in Rome. Bill also enjoyed participating with his friends in the World Series of Bocce Tournament, held each summer in Rome. During his banking employment he was active in Rome community organizations. Bill enjoyed watching many sports and he was a longtime Dallas Cowboys Football fan.


Bill will be fondly remembered as a kind and caring person, whose smile lit up the room.


In addition to his wife, Carol, he is survived by his children, William Countryman, Jr., Syracuse, Janet Tsamolis, Atlanta, GA and Gina M. Reinhardt and partner, Jay Lee, Prospect; grandsons, Stephen Malecki, Westmoreland and Jonathon Reinhardt, Barneveld. He was predeceased by two sisters, Shirley Light and Lorraine Baronkin and by a brother, Gary Countryman.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter’s Church, Rome. There are no calling hours, however, his family will receive those attending at the conclusion of the Mass. Interment will be private in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Rome. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association of CNY, 441 West Kirkpatrick Street, Syracuse, NY 13204, or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, c/o St. Jude Tribute Program P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, Tennessee 38101.
