Boonville- Willard L. Thayer, 79, of 115 South St, formerly of East Schuyler St, affectionatley known as "Curly" passed away on Friday, July 8, 2011, at his residence while under the loving care of his wife, Mary, family and hospice. He was born in Floyd, on October 30, 1931, a son of William and Julia Cushman Thayer. Curly grew up in Floyd, attending school in Holland Patent. In 1951, Mr. Thayer entered the US Navy, serving his country during the Korean Conflict Era stationed aboard the USS Randolph. Upon his honorable discharge in 1955, he was awarded the National Defense Service Ribbon and the Navy Occupation Medal. Thereafter he was employed at Revere Copper & Brass Co. of Rome, Burrows Paper Co. Lyonsdale, before his employment for twenty nine years at Eathen Allen Furniture Co. of Boonville, in the lumber sorting department, retiring in 1997. Mr. Thayer was united in marriage with Mary Sullivan on November 22, 1952, at St. Joseph's Church, Boonville. This was a loving union lasting almost 59 years. After their marriage the couple settled in Talcottville, moving to East Schuyler St., Boonville, in 1963 where they resided, until moving to Kortenaer Village, in 2008. Mr. Thayer was a member of St. Jospeh's Church, Boonville, and the South Lewis Chapter Knights of Columbus. He greatly enjoyed hunting and the outdoors, gardening; he was an avid fan of the New York Yankees Baseball Team and the NY Giants Football Team. In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by seven daughters and sons-in law, Debbie (Dennis) Crofoot, Boonville, Teresa (Wayne) Lampman, Boonville, Rosanne (David) Butts, Port Leyden, Kim (Tom) Stanley, Port Leyden, Tammy (Scott) Sperry, Forestport, Robin (Stephen) Butts, Boonville, Jill (Chris) Murphy, Edgewater, Fla; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Timmy (Sharon) Thayer, Port Leyden, and Rodney Thayer, Boonville, thirty grandchildren, several great grandchildren; a special nephew, Mack Waterman, Boonville; two brothers, Francis Stroudsburg, PA, Kenneth, Ava, three sisters, Ruby, Yorkville, Edith, Whitesboro, and Florence, TN. He was predeceased by a grandson, Toby Thayer; five brothers, Melvin, Oliver, Asa, John, and Edward; and by four sisters, Wealthy, Erma, Harriet, and Susan. His family wishes to express their heart felt thanks and appreciation to hospice nurses, Renee, Maranda and Kathy Smith A prayer service will be on Monday at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at AM at St. Joseph's church, Boonville, where Rev. Sean Patrick O'Brien, pastor will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, with military honors renderd by Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and the Tun Tavern Marine Corps League. Calling hours are Sunday, 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home, where members of the South Lewis Knights of Columbus will meet in a group at 7:00 PM for services.
