Lyons Falls - Wilfred J. Grenier, 82, husband of Mary, longtime resident of Cherry St., passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville. Affectionately known as "Willie," he was born on February 20, 1934, in Tupper Lake, a son of Vincent and Alice Castilloux Grenier. He attended Boonville High School, where he excelled in sports, earning Varsity Letters for baseball, basketball, soccer and track, and was a graduate with the Class of 1952. In his younger days he worked at Dellerba's Market, set bowling pins at LaMarca's and Masonic Temple, shoveled snow and pedaled newspapers. Willie enlisted in the United States Navy on October 14, 1952, spending four years overseas during the Korean War as a US Navy Medic, before his honorable discharge December 12, 1956. He then spent four years in the Navy Reserves. Following his military service he was employed for local constructions companies including Law Bros., Lyons Falls, Felix Gaetano, Boonville, Lou Amicucci, Woodgate, and Carl Calnero, Rome. Willie was then employed for 24 years as a fire fighter for Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, retiring in 1993. On November 24, 1962, Wilfred was united in marriage with Mary Frances Liss at St. Hedwig's Church, Houseville. Willie was a loving and devoted husband, and for the past several years took care of Mary through her illness before she entered Sunset Nursing Home. Willie was of the Catholic Faith, and was a member of St. John's Church, Lyons Falls, where he served as Lector and Usher. Willie was a member of the Lyons Falls Fire Dept., where for several years he served as Chief. He was former president of the Fireman's Union Local #111 at Griffiss Air Base Fire Co. He was a member of the Charles J. Love Post #406 American Legion Boonville, where he was past commander, and Sargent of Arms of the color guard. Several years ago, Willie was the President of the Boonville Fire Co. Willie is survived by his wife Mary, Boonville, his brother and sister-in-law: Joseph "Aubrey" (Irene) Grenier, Boonville, a special niece and caregiver Anita Karpinski, several more nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Jean Grenier Murphy a nephew Dennis P. Murphy, and by a nephew Duane Grenier. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 11, at 11:00 am at St. Joseph's Church of Christ Our Hope Catholic Community, Boonville. Spring interment with military honors will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Boonville. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, from 6-8 pm at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
