Forestport - Veronica E. (Simmons) Golden, 77, a former long-time resident of North Lake Road, the widow of Lewis, passed away on Friday, August 15, 2008, at St. Luke's Medical Center, New Hartford. Before her admission to the hospital, Mrs. Golden had resided at the Heritage Home of Utica since 1995. A native of Rossie, NY, St. Lawrence Co., she was born on April 26, 1931, a daughter of Ralph and June Hall Simmons. She grew up in Gouverneur, where she attended Rock Island Country School, and Gouverneur school. A polio victim, she spent a year and a half in Ithaca for rehabilitation. Before moving to the Boonville area, she was employed by Dr. Stahl and by John Jurkovich Siding & Windows, both of Gouverneur. She had also worked for Victory Markets in Utica, Rome and Boonville, and she was a waitress at Karlen's Diner, Boonville. On November 23, 1950, Veronica was united in marriage with Lewis (Phil) Golden, at the First Baptist Church of Boonville. In 195l, the couple settled on the North Lake Road, where she lived until 1992, when she moved to Boonville, residing at Kortenaer Village. Her husband, a Griffis Air Force Base retiree, died on Aug. 3, 1990. For a number of years Mrs. Golden was employed as a clerk typist at Griffis Air Force Base in Rome, until her job was phased out. She was also a local Avon representative; she sold Tupperware products and was a caretaker at the Forestport Radar Annex. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, and she enjoyed crossword puzzles and word searches. She is survived by two sons; Walter R. Golden, Watertown, Glen and his wife, Suzen, Duanesburg; three grandchildren, Pamela, Jennifer, Jillian; one great-granddaughter, Allison; one sister, Martina Facey, Dekalb Jct. NY; five sisters- in-law, Elizabeth Winters, Forestport, Helen Nutt, Boonville, Mary Livermore, Waterville, Yon Thomas, Arizona, and Lois Simmons, Fort Plain, NY. She was predeceased by twin daughters, her step father Glen Hall who raised her, and three brothers, Maynard, Melvin, and Murl; four brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Her Funeral will be Tuesday at 4:00 P.M. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Rev. Donald H. Karlen will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be private in Beechwood Cemetery, Forestport.
