Talcottville- Verle E. Yelton, Jr., 83, husband of Wynola, longtime resident of the Domser Road, passed away in the comfort of his home on January 26, 2018, while under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice. Affectionately known as Yogi, he was born on July 27, 1934 in Cold Brook, a son of Verle E. and Mildred Weaver Yelton. To help support his family, he began working at the age of 12 on the Jack Alger farm outside Boonville, while he received his education at Boonville Central School. In 1954 Yogi began his employment as a paper maker at Georgia Pacific in Lyons Falls. This was a career spanning 43 years until his retirement from Lyons Falls Pulp and Paper in 1997. On October 30, 1954 Verle was united in marriage with Wynola Yager at the Hawkinsville United Methodist Church. Together with Wynola they were leaders of a 4H group in Talcottville and Hawkinsville for several years. Verle was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed the time he spent hunting, fishing and trapping. He was an instructor of Small and Big Game hunter safety courses for over 22 years, and was also the president of the Boonville Rod & Gun Club for 16 years. He loved the community he lived in and spent countless hours volunteering and devoting his time; as a trustee on the Town of Leyden Board, as caretaker of the Veterans Memorial in Talcottville, and also caretaker of the Talcottville United Methodist Church, where he was an active and longtime member. Verle is survived by his wife of 63 years Wynola, his children: Deborah (Mike) Overton, Lowville, Richard (Tammy) Yelton, Boonville, and Loretta (Brian) Sowich, Bridgeport; eight grandchildren: Jody, Joel, Richard Jr., Amanda, Cody, Kimberly, Kristin and Jada, several great-grandchildren, and siblings: Gordon (Joyce) Schleicher, Bernard Yelton, Beverly Wheelock, Shirley (Stewart) Dunn. He was predeceased by his sisters Helen Abel, Mabel Young, and brothers Paul and Robert Yelton. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 10:30 am at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Interment this spring will be in Hayes Cemetery, Hawkinsville. Calling Hours will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 100 Lomond Court, Utica, New York 13502.
