Port Leyden - V. Arlene (Higby) Marmon, 96, formerly of Canal Street, passed away on Thursday evening, April 1, 2010, at Lewis County Extended Care Facility, Lowville, where she had resided since 2006. She was born in the Town of West Turin on June 22, 1913, a daughter of Herbert E. and Mary E. (Staring) Higby. A longtime resident of the Turin area, she received her education at the Town of West Turin Rural School prior to graduating from Lowville Academy and Lowville Teachers Training Class. On October 14, 1933, Arlene was united in marriage with Sherman Marmon by the Rev'd Russell Hall at the parsonage of the Port Leyden Methodist Church. After their marriage the couple operated several dairy farms in the Turin area. In 1944 they purchased the former Hart Homestead Farm on East Main Street in Turin. In addition to the operation of their farm, the Marmon's founded and operated the popular Pioneer Inn Ski Lodge and a sugarbush operation. They also were well known for their "U-Pick Strawberry Patch" at their farm. In 1964 they moved to the Newport area, living on State Route 28. Mrs. Marmon was employed as a housekeeper at several homes in that area for many years. In 1988 they moved to their home in Port Leyden. Mr. Marmon, a carpenter and heavy equipment operator for the N.Y.S. Dept. of Transportation, died on July 4, 2000. Mrs. Marmon was a member of the Turin United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Turin Grange. Arlene is survived by a granddaughter, Mrs. Kimberly Teal of Brantingham; a great-granddaughter, Mandy Teal; a great-grandson, John Tyler Teal; four great-great-grandchildren, Courtney and Cheyenne Foll, Allie Teal, and Lena Kilmer; two step granddaughters, Christine Gydesen of Lyons Falls, and Bonnie Mueller of Middleville; a step great-grandson, David Mueller of Middleville; a step great- granddaughter, Tabitha Foll of Ava; a daughter-in- law, Kathryn A. Marmon of Lyons Falls; and several nieces and nephews. Arlene was predeceased by a son, Richard L. Marmon, on May 28, 1997, two sisters, Mildred Wendt in 1995, and Evelyn Kentner Hines in 1969. Her funeral will be on Monday at 1:00 pm at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, where Pastor Joan Ripp will officiate. Interment will be in Turin Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 11:00 until the time of the service.
