Thelma W. Romeo

May 9, 1937 — January 4, 2021

Wylie, TX- Thelma W. Romeo, 83, a former longtime resident of Woodgate Drive, Boonville and more recently of Wylie, Texas, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021, after a brief illness, at Baylor, Scott and White Hospital, in Plano, Texas. Thelma was born on May 9, 1937, to Francis and Edna (VanNort) Wheelock. Thelma graduated from New Hartford High School, with the Class of 1954. On September 3, 1955, Thelma married Louis A. Romeo, which later ended in divorce. They had four children; Jean, Mark, John and Karen. After graduating, Thelma was employed at New York Telephone Co. in Utica, until the birth of her 1st child. At which time she stayed home to be a mother and homemaker. In 1980, Boonville Housing Authority opened Kortenear Village, a retirement community in Boonville, where Mrs. Romeo was employed as office manager, where she greatly enjoyed her employment until retiring in 1995. During her tenure at Kortenaer Village, Thelma always "went the extra mile" to assist the residents and she enjoyed many friendships with coworkers and residents over the years. After retiring, Thelma relocated to Texas, where she resided near her daughter, Jean. She enjoyed bowling at the Boonville Bowl, with the Tuesday Night Bowling League. For many years Thelma enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities and she also enjoyed reading, playing solitaire on her kindle and watching the Texas Rangers Baseball games as she was an avid fan. Thelma is survived by her children, Jean (Robert) Thayer, Sachse, TX, Mark (Wendy) Romeo, Karen (Kevin) Philbrick, Boonville. Thelma greatly loved her family and was affectionately known as "Gram" by her grandchildren and as "GG" by her great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are; Nicole (Chris) Heimann, Rowlett, TX, Robbie Thayer, Haslet TX, Ryan (Chelsea) Philbrick, Santee, CA, Abby (Maurizio) Philbrick, Charlotte, NC, Kara (Dawson) Philbrick, Clinton, NY; great grandchildren, Sadie and Ellie Heimann and Jay & Jo Thayer; three sisters, Joyce Schleicher, Boonville, Gwen Wheelock, Syracuse and Lorraine (William) Obernesser, New Hartford; sisters in law, Beverly Wheelock and Nancy Wheelock, both of Boonville and several nieces and nephews. Thelma was devastated by the sudden loss of her son, John, on April 19, 2013. It gives us great peace to know that they are together again in heaven. She was also predeceased by sisters, Grace Johnson and Jean Wheelock and brothers, Harold and George Wheelock. Services and interment in Boonville Cemetery will be held at a later date to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to Erwin Library 104 Schuyler St. Boonville, NY 13309.
