Constableville - Spencer E. Meiss, 89, of High Street, a former longtime resident of Glenfield and husband of Eleanor, went on to be with his Lord on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at the Lewis Coounty Extended Care Facility in Lowville, where he had resided since July 2007. He was born in Glenfield on January 9, 1919, a son of Marshall Ray and Jessie Adams Meiss. Spencer grew up in Glenfield, where he attended a rural school and General Martin School. For thirty seven years he operated the Meiss family farm on Meiss Road, Glenfield, until retiring in 1973 when he moved to Constableville. From 1958 to 1963 Mr. Meiss was employed as a school bus driver for General Martin School, and from 1973 until his retirement in 1981 he was employed as a school bus driver for the South Lewis Central School District at the Constableville School. For several years he was also employed with his son, Jeff, as caretaker of Rural Cemetery, Constableville. On June 12, 1944, Spencer was united in marriage with Eleanor Jackson at Turin Methodist Church. Mrs. Meiss died on December 12, 1977. Mr. Meiss was a member of Constableville Methodist Church, the Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Lowville, and for many years he attended Glenfield Methodist Church. He was also a member of Constableville Fire Department, Huckleberry Hunting Club, Chases Lake, Glendale Grange, and the former Turin Masonic Lodge. He is survived by one daughter and son-in- law, Sharon and Thomas Ortlieb, Lowville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John and Diane Meiss, Broadalbin, NY, and Jeff Meiss, Constableville; four grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Meiss, Rome, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Harold (Muriel) Meiss, Lowville; and several nieces and nephews. Spencer was predeceased by a son, Michael, on August 20, 1992, and by three sisters, Mrs. Gordon (Erma) Boutwell, Mrs. Leon (Alice) Duncan, and Mrs. Walter (Mildred) Krokowski; and a brother, Harold Meiss. His Funeral Services will be Saturday at 10:30 A.M. at the Bethel Church of the Nazarene, Route 12, Lowville, where Pastor Keith Hardy will officiate. Interment will be in Martinsburg Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the Church. Spencer greatly loved his pet cats and dogs, and had a tender heart toward animals. His funeral arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
