West Branch - Sophia R. (Kaido) Riegler, 92, of State Route 26, West Branch, passed away on February 7, 2015 at Bethany Gardens, Rome, where she had been a resident since August 6, 2012. She was born in West Leyden, on November 20, 1922, the daughter of the late Thomas and Pauline Melifski Kaido and was raised in West Leyden, where she attended school. On May 26, 1951, Sophia was united in marriage to Robert T. Riegler at St. Mary's Nativity Church, West Leyden. After that the couple lived in West Leyden, before they constructed their current home near West Branch in 1956. Mr. Riegler died on October 20, 2011. Robert was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II in the European Theater. Sophia greatly enjoyed traveling; for many years during Robert's vacation they loved to take their family on tours of the United States and Canada. Sophia also enjoyed canning and freezing their bountiful harvests of organic fruits and vegetables from their garden, and hosting many family reunions and parties at their camp in Swancott Mills. She was a member of St. Mary's Nativity Church, West Leyden and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Sophia is survived by her three daughters and two sons-in-law, Karen Williamson and Charles, West Leyden, Kathy Thomann and David, Rome, and Joan Colangelo, Rome; two grandchildren, Todd Williamson, West Leyden, Jill Ross and Dante, and two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sophia Ross, all of Greensburg, PA; one brother Walter Kaido, West Leyden. She was predeceased by her four sisters: Betty Kaido, Cecelia Chrzanowski, Angeline Toper, and Lottie Mack and two brothers, Chester Kaido and Joseph Kaido; and a son-in-law, James Colangelo. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Nativity Church, West Leyden, where Rev. Daniel Chapin, pastor of St. Stephen's Church, Croghan, will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm, Tuesday, February 10, at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St., Boonville. Interment will be in the Spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, West Leyden.
