On Friday, May 4, 2007, Sigrid Elizabeth Hughes Britton, 89, left this life to join her family and friends who had already left to be with the Lord. She was born April 5, 1918, the daughter of Mitilda and Fred Hughes of Collinsville, N.Y. the third of five children. She graduated from Constableville High School with the Class of 1937, and from the Methodist School of Nursing, of Brooklyn, NY, with the Class of 1942. It was in Brooklyn that she met her future husband, Louis Britton. They married in 1944. In 1947, she and her husband co-founded Sunset Nursing and Maternity Hospital in Constableville. For many years the facility provided a home like atmosphere for both the elderly and the nearly 2000 babies born there. In 1964, the couple opened a new nursing home facility in Boonville. This facility was greatly expanded in 1971, and again in 1985. It is now known as Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, providing a complete range of skilled elder care and physical therapy. Mrs. Britton retired in 1983, but always remained an integral part of Sunset. Sigrid was predeceased by her husband, Louis, her sister Georgia Hughes Townsend and her brother John Hughes. She is survived by her children, Oliva Britton Shoemaker and husband, Charles, her son, Jerome Britton and his wife, Terri, her beloved eight grandchildren, and step grandchild, and seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Fred Hughes and wife, Betty, Boonville, one sister, Thelma Hughes Lyle, and husband Robert, Naples, Fla, and several nieces and nephews. Sigridï¿(TM)s family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, especially to everyone working on C-Wing, for the genuine loving care that was given to her. She being a Registered Nurse herself, understood and appreciated the compassion and dignity she was shown. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial celebration of her life on Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. at the Boonville United Methodist Church, where Rev. William A. Mudge, pastor, and Rev. Fr. Donald H. Karlen, pastor of St. Josephï¿(TM)s Church, Boonville, will officiate. In keeping with her wishes there will be no visitation. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at St. Patrickï¿(TM)s Cemetery, Constableville. Memorial contributions my be made to her favorite charity, Constable Hall, C/O Mr. Doug Brodie 5285 Dayan St., Lowville, NY 13367, or to Sunset Resident Activities Fund 232 Academy St. Boonville, NY 13309.
