Sandra (Alger) Bernard, R.N., 63, of West Leyden Road, wife of John, passed away unexpectedly at St. Lukeï¿(TM)s Memorial Hospital in New Hartford, on Saturday, September 9, 2006. She was born in Utica, on March 14, 1943, a daughter of Arthur M. and Allie Pettigrew Alger. Sandra grew up near Boonville, graduating from Boonville Central School, with the Class of 1960. Thereafter she attended State University at Plattsburg, graduating in 1964, earning a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. She was employed as a school nurse-teacher at schools in Webster, Port Jervis, and at Hyde Park, returning to Boonville in 1972. After that she was employed as a Registered Nurse at Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville. Her last employment was as an R.N. training specialist for United Cerebral Palsy of Utica. She retired in 1997. Sandra was united in marriage with John J. Bernard, Jr. on February 19, 1966, at Port Jervis. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Boonville. She also greatly enjoyed cooking, baking and knitting. Sandy greatly loved her husband, and family, and spending time with her two granddaughters. In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by her children; Jennifer C. Bernard, Bristow, VA., Jack B. Bernard, and wife, Lori, Boonville, Joel P. Bernard, San Diego, CA., two grandchildren; Lexi, and Brynn, one brother and sister in law; Thomas and Joanne Alger, one sister and brother in law; Christine and Richard Jokajtys, all of Boonville, four nieces; Amanda, Allison, Elizabeth, Suzanne, three nephews; Arthur, Jeff and Steven, her father and mother in law; John and Clara Bernard, Owego, NY., a brother in law; Mike Bernard, Owego, and a sister in law; Kathy Bernard, Kingston. Her Funeral Service will be Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where The Rev. Dr. Patricia L. Schick, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, and a former interim and intern Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Boonville, will officiate. Interment will follow in interment in Boonville Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship to be established at Adirondack Central School in Boonville, C/O Jennifer Bernard, 13633 Newtonmore Place Bristow, VA. 20136.
