West Leyden - Ruth M. (Samson) Goodhines, 97, formerly of Mud Lake Road, Town of Lewis, and SR 26 in West Leyden, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the Presbyterian Nursing Home, New Hartford. A native of Mohawk Hill in the Town of West Turin, she was a daughter of Joseph and Bertha (Kapfer) Samson. Ruth grew up on Mohawk Hill, and graduated from Constableville High School with the Class of 1934. Thereafter she was employed at Henry Schmokers General Store in West Leyden. Ruth attended the Utica School of Commerce from 1941 until her graduation in 1943. She was employed as a payroll clerk in the main office of the former Utica Knitting Company from 1943 until 1955. On December 29, 1956, Ruth was united in marriage with Roy Goodhines at St. Frances DeSales Church in Utica. The couple made their home on Mud Lake Road, near West Leyden, where they operated a dairy farm until retiring in 1990. Following Mr. Goodhines' death on July 7, 1993, Ruth moved to her new home in the village of West Leyden. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, West Leyden, the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, and the Young At Heart Senior Citizens of Boonville. Ruth greatly enjoyed raising her large flower and vegetable gardens every summer. Ruth is survived by a sister, Marie S. Kupiec of New Hartford; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Samson in 1973. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Nativity Church, West Leyden, where the Rev'd Lawrence Marullo will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, West Leyden. Calling hours are Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville.
