Port Leyden- Robert S. (Bob) Freeman, 81, of River Road, husband of Elma L. and a former long time resident of Spencer Road near Constableville, went to be with the LORD on Monday, April 2, 2012, under the care of his loving family and hospice. He was born in Utica, on March 21, 1931, the only child of Edward and Eleanor Higby Freeman. His mother passed away when he was five. Bob was brought up by his grandparents, Clarence and Jennette Higby. Bob graduated from Constableville High School with the Class of 1949. He attended Cornell for a course in milk testing. He tested milk for farmers throughout Lewis Co. Mr. Freeman enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a radar mechanic stationed in Greenland. Bob came home on leave and married Elma L. Gillette (daughter of Hugh and Susie Gillette) on June 21, 1952, at the Turin United Methodist Church. Afterwards he was stationed at Suffok Co. Air Base on Long Island where he and Elma lived until his honorable discharge in 1954. He worked at Griffiss Air Base in Rome, drove school bus for Constableville Central School, and owned and operated the General Store in Constableville. Later he was employed for the US Postal Service, first as Postmaster in Constableville, then as Rural Carrier in Constableville, before transferring and retiring from Boonville and West Leyden Post Offices. Bob was an avid sportsman. He began hunting and trapping at an early age, continuing for many years. Bob owned & operated White Mountain Animal Lures for several years; making his own lure and selling other trapping supplies. He attended and gave seminars at trapping conventions in many states from Maine to South Dakota. In addition to his wife, Elma, of 59 years, he is survived by a daughter, Sue (William) O'Brien, Port Leyden, granddaughters, Kate O'Brien, (fianc, Jimmy Carreon,) Mary (Brad) and great grandson, Hunter Burrows, Port Leyden, a daughter, Sally (Gerald) Godfrey, Fulton, NY, grandson, Scott (Lauren) and great grandson, Parker Wilbert of South Carolina, grandson, David (Jackie) Wilbert, Colorado, step grandson, John (Maureen) and step-great grandchildren, Hannah and Keegan Godfrey, Phoenix, AZ. Bob was a member of Lyons Falls Bible Fellowship Church. He will be remembered for love of God and Family. His Funeral will be Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, with interment in Rural Cemetery Constableville.
