Richard L. Jones

Turin- Richard L. "Uncle" Jones, 86, of East Main Street, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. Richard was born on February 5, 1928 in Turin, the son of Clifford and Alma Evans Jones. He grew up in Turin, where he graduated from high school. On May 13, 1946, Richard enlisted with the U.S. Army, serving overseas until his honorable discharge on May 31, 1947. Richard was united in marriage with Waneta A. Galarneau on August 21, 1950 in Elkton, Maryland. Richard again served his country when he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force on February 23, 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict, until he was honorably discharged as a sergeant on February 22, 1955. For several years Richard was employed as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver for General Crushed Stone, Watertown. For a time, Richard served as Town Supervisor for the Town of Turin. In 1957 the couple built a home on Gomer Hill Road, where they resided until 1975 when they purchased their home on East Main Street. "Aunt" Waneta, who was a co-owner of the Village Caf, passed away on April 3, 2005. Richard was an avid fan of NY Yankee Baseball, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He very much missed his wife's cooking, especially her apple pie and donuts. Richard is survived by his sister-in-law: Maxine Galarneau, Turin, his nieces and nephews: Edward G. Galarneau and his daughter Sage, Turin; Debra (Robert) Bosco, and their children Robert, Jacob and Anna, Glenfield; Janet (David) Twining and their children, Delaney and Dawson, Ocean City, MD; Brian (Linda) Galarneau and their children Scott and Todd, Turin; and Timothy Galarneau, and his daughter Kylee, Syracuse, many more nieces and nephews also survive. Besides his wife, Richard was predeceased by his sisters, Vivien Cook, Lucy Wiedrick, and Jane Curtis. Relatives and friends are invited to attend graveside memorial services with military honors on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 10:30 am at Turin Cemetery, where Roger Crout, co-pastor of the United Methodist South Lewis Parish will officiate. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Turin Volunteer Fire Company, Inc.
