Reuben H. Garvine, Jr.

Port Leyden - Reuben H. Garvine, Jr. 81, formerly of East Main St., passed away on November 16, 2018 at Lewis Country Extended Care Facility, Lowville, while surrounded by his loving family. Reuben was born on March 12, 1937 in Rockland, Delaware, a son of Reuben H. and Mary Etta Frances Chandler Garvine. Reuben enlisted in the US Army on August 8, 1955, where he was then stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge on July 30, 1958. Reuben then returned to Rockland, DE where he was employed at Doe Skin Paper mill. He furthered his education in business at Goldey-Beacom College, before owning the local Atlantic Gas Station. On January 30, 1960, Reuben was united in marriage with Gretchen Randle Bailey. The couple moved to New York State, where Mr. Garvine was employed for a time with General Electric and Milligan & Higgins. He was also a former truck driver for Packers Meat Co. Reuben enjoyed chess, fishing, and found great joy playing billiards. He loved listening to bluegrass music and was also a talented musician entertaining many with the flute, guitar and bass guitar. Reuben is survived by his children: Michael R. Brenna, Cathleen C. (William) Abel, Susan C. Frye, Mary R. Garvine, Rebecca (Stirling) Gartung, Reuben H. (Bethany) Garvine, III, Peter B. Garvine, and Judith P. Johnson; 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Gloria (Nick) Adamovage, and Kate Austin, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former spouse Gretchen Garvine, a brother Gordy Garvine, and sister Ruby Bell. In keeping with Reubens wishes all services will be held privately. Arrangements are in care of the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville. His family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Lewis County General Hospital ICU and Nursing Home, as well as Lewis County Hospice for their exceptional care.
