Lee Center – Phyllis S. Szewczyk, 95, widow of Walter, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2022, with her daughter Nadine and niece Sharon by her side, at Baptist Health & Rehabilitation Center, Scotia, where she had most recently resided.
Phyllis was born in Rome, New York on May 24, 1927 a daughter of Joseph and Katherine Szymanik Szur. She grew up in Rome receiving her education at Transfiguration Catholic School, graduating from Rome Free Academy with the Class of 1945. On June 14, 1947, Phyllis was united in marriage with Walter Szewczyk at Transfiguration Church, Rome. The couple settled on Stokes Hill, where together they built their home and operated a dairy farm until 2001.
For 44 years Mrs. Szewczyk was employed as telephone operator, first for NY Telephone Co., Rome, retiring from Verizon Telephone Co., Utica in 1989.
In honor of their 60th wedding anniversary, Phyllis and Walter enjoyed an Alaskan Cruise and tour of the states interior, including Mt. McKinley. Walter, a WWII veteran and retiree of Spargo Wire passed away on March 29, 2019.
Phyllis was a member of Transfiguration Church, Rome, the Rome Polish Home, and also the Telephone Pioneers of America. She found great joy caring for her vegetable and flower gardens.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter Nadine Szewczyk, Ballston Spa, NY, and several nieces and nephews. The last of her siblings, she was predeceased by brothers: John, Joseph and Stanley Szur, her sisters: Mary Szalkowski, Josephine Bradlinski, Victoria Rutka, and two sisters who died in infancy.
Phyllis’ family would like to express heartfelt gratitude for the care and compassion given to Phyllis during her stay at Baptist Health & Rehabilitation Center in Scotia.
Funeral Services will begin with a prayer service on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 9:00 am at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, Constableville. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, West Leyden. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Sept. 16 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.
