West Leyden- SFC, Peter L. Sweeney, III, Retired, age 47, husband of Julie M. Weiler Sweeney, passed away at his residence on Saturday, April 9, 2016, in the care of his loving wife, family and close friends. Mr. Sweeney was a lifelong resident of West Leyden, where he attended elementary school, graduating from Adirondack Central School, Boonville, with the Class of 1987. After graduation he began his 27 year career of service to his country in the U.S. Army, during which time Mr. Sweeney served two consecutive tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, 2002-2005. Since 1993, Pete served in the US Army Reserve 414th Civil Affairs Unit and then the 403rd, retiring in 2013, due to combat related illnesses. On October 23, 1992, Pete was united in marriage with Julie M. Weiler at St. Mary's Church, Constableville. Mr. Sweeney was dedicated to his family and his country. Pete was also an active member of his community, where he served as Superintendent of highways, for the Town of Lewis, for a time, before pursuing his vocation as work leader for AMSA 81, DOD, Liverpool, NY. On many occasions he enjoyed visiting West Leyden Elementary School with a detachment of 414th Soldiers where they presented the elementary children with "military themed fun days." In addition to his wife, Julie, Pete is survived by his son, Logun Peter Sweeney, at home and many additional family members of whom he was an irreplaceable part thereof, including his father and mother in law, George and Shirley Weiler, West Leyden; Sharon White, David (Kim) Weiler, Randy (Kelley) Weiler, and Cheryl (Doug) Rauscher, his sisters, Angela (Rob) Evans, Janell (Nick) Tavenner and Ciara Stocklosa; his mother, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a close family friend, Amanda J. Murphy. His Funeral will be Wednesday at 12 Noon at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Interment with full Military Honors will be in Boonville Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
