Forestport - Peter James Scouten, 43, of State Route 28, passed away on Saturday. January 29, 2011. He was born in Utica on November 4, 1967, a son of Peter Jay and Gale (Ritter) Scouten. Pete grew up in Forestport, where he attended elementary school and graduated from Adirondack Central High School in Boonville with the class of 1985. While attending school he participated in wrestling. He played little league and Babe Ruth baseball in conjunction with the Forestport Athletic Association. After graduation from high school, he was employed as a tower painter for NYS Power Authority, Marcy, and then for several years he was employed as a heavy equipment operator for area construction companies. Several years ago Mr. Scouten opened an auto body repair shop in Boonville. In 1997 he and his brother Ron partnered in founding Scouten's Automotive Services, located on Rt. 28 near Forestport. At the present time he was operating the body shop part of this business. On September 18, 1999, Peter was united in marriage with Colleen M. Henry, at St. Patrick's Church, Forestport. Pete loved snowmobile racing. In January 2010 he won first place in both the Eagle River (Wisconsin) World Championship Vintage Snowmobile Race and the 340 Free Air Stock Class at the Boonville Snow Festival. He raced 1977 Vintage Skidoo Sleds as racer # 46. He was an avid hunter; he enjoyed playing Forestport Town Team Softball, and for several years he coached Little League baseball for the Forestport Athletic Association. His other interests included downhill skiing, motorcycle riding, camping, and having fun with his family and friends. Mr. Scouten was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Forestport, where he had served as an altar boy. He was also a member of the Forestport Youth Athletic Association, Northern New York Vintage Snowmobile Racers Association, the Trackside Blazers Snowmobile Club, and the NRA. Pete was a loving husband and father. In addition to his wife, Colleen, he is survived by four children, Steven, Christopher, Sarah, and Andrew, all at home; his parents, Peter and Gale, Forestport; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Kimberly Scouten, and their children, Michael and Abigail, all of Forestport; his mother and father-in-law, Ernst and Carol Kunz of West Leyden; his father-in-law, Ken Henry of Boonville; two sisters-in-law, Angela Fynmore and her companion, Michael Moore, children Jack and Avery, all of Boonville, and Christina Henry and her companion Noah Palczynski and son Aiden; and many other family and friends. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Sandra Sue, and by an infant brother, Robert Michael; and aunts and uncles. A prayer service will be on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Forestport, celebrated by Rev. Sean Patrick O'Brien. Spring interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Forestport. Calling hours are Tuesday 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
