Port Leyden- Noreen C. (Leichty) Smith, 80, of Pearl St., wife of John L. passed away suddenly at her residence, on Friday, April 29, 2016. She was born in the Town of Leyden, on September 21, 1935, a daughter of Jacob R. and Ella Rowsam Leichty. Noreen grew up at Barrett's Corners in the Town of Leyden, receiving her education at Town of Leyden Rural School, Talcottville, before completing her education and graduating from Boonville Central School. Later she was employed as a clerk at Ames, Lowville and on the housekeeping staff at Waters Edge Resort in Old Forge. On April 16, 1955, Noreen was united in marriage with John L. Smith, at St. Joseph's Church, Boonville. This was a loving and joy filled union which endured for 61 years. In 1965, the couple constructed their present home on Pearl St. where they had since lived. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden. Noreen will be fondly remembered as a faithful and loving wife, devoted mother and loving grandmother. Her greatest accomplishment was raising her seven children and caring for her grandchildren. She never placed herself before anyone else, no matter who they were. She was a caring, kind and whole hearted woman, who enjoyed countless hours visiting with family and friends. Sharing in holiday and family gatherings, always provided Noreen with great joy. In the past few years, Noreen and John, had great times with cherished friends when they rediscovered their love of dancing. In addition to her husband, John, Noreen is survived by her children; Peter (Catherine) Smith, and their family, Gina, Joshua and Jennifer, Lisa (Raymond) Brown, and their family, Jessica and Justin, Timothy (Nancy) Smith and their family, Matilde, Melinda (Robert) Kraeger, and their family, Amanda, Zachary, Jared, Brandon, Matthew, Robert, John Paul, Kristina, Olivia and Garrett, John (Debra) Smith, and their family, John Tyler and Justin, all of Port Leyden, Rebecca (Blair) Brown, and their family, Brittany and Connor, Glenfield, Rachel (Terry) McClelland, and their family, Karlaina, Alexandra, Teryn and Colin, Lowville, and several great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are three sisters, Marian Carpenter, Constableville, June (Harry) Jenks, Irene (Joseph) Grenier, all of Boonville; one sister in law, Barbara Leichty, Boonville. She was predeceased by two brothers, William Leichty and his wife, Leona and Walter Leichty, and by two sisters, Doris Casamento, and Rita Shanks and three half-sisters, Erma Berger, Frances Burki and Evelyn DeVoe. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Lawrence Marullo, on Friday, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden, with interment to follow in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours are Friday, 10 A.M. until 12 Noon at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
