Forestport - Michael J. Hurley, 60, of River Street, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, December 29, 2010. A native of Forestport, he was born on April 26, 1950, a son of James and Virginia (Uhlig) Hurley. Mike attended school in Foresport, and graduated in 1968 from the newly formed Adirondack Central School system in Boonville. For a time he was employed as a heavy equipment operator at Chad Burdick Construction Co. in Foresport. For twenty-eight years Mr. Hurley was employed as a machinist and plant manager for Sampo Co. of Forestport, (formerly Rome Specialty Co.), until the firm closed in 2008. On November 26, 1973, Mike was united in marriage with Judy Wiley at Hotel Doyle in Forestport. Mike realized his greatest ambition in life as being an active member of the Forestport Fire Fighters. During his forty-year period of dedicated service to the department, he served as Captain, then as Chief for four years. At the present time he was the Training Officer and Lieutenant. Mr. Hurley was active in the department's purchasing of new firefighting equipment. In 1991, Mike initiated the Foresptort Town Birthday/Craft Fair, an event held yearly in August under the auspices of the Foresport Fire Company. In addition to his wife, Judy, he is survived by four sons, Matthew Hurley and his wife, Rena, and Jeremy Hurley, all of St. Augustine, FL, Trevor Hurley of Orlando, FL, and Jeffrey Fazekas and his wife, Kim of Prospect; a daughter, Shelly Privett and her husband, John of Forestport; five grandchildren; a brother, Patrick Hurley and his wife, Debra of Forestport; a sister, Diane Hurley of Floyd; two nieces, Jennifer and Jessica, both of Forestport, and his beloved dog, Triska. Funeral services are Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Foresport Fire Fighters Hall on River Street in Forestport, where Fr. Sean Patrick O'Brien will officiate. Spring interment will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Forestport. Visitation is Sunday, January 2, from 4-8 p.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville.
