Maxine A. Galarneau

Turin- Maxine A. Galarneau, 93, of West Main St., widow of Cleon, passed away at Samaritan Hospital, Watertown, on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.


Maxine was born in the Town of Turin, on February 20, 1930, a daughter of Elroy and Nellie Burham Edick. She grew up in Greig and graduated from General Martin High School, Glenfield, with the Class of 1948. On July 29, 1950, Maxine was united in marriage with Cleon Galarneau, at Jacksonville, North Carolina, where Cleon was stationed while serving his country in the U.S. Marines.


In 1956, the couple purchased a farm on Whiskey Lane Road, near Turin which they operated until 1980, when their son, Brian and later a grandson, Scott, took over the operation of the farm. Mr. Galarneau, a noted owner and trainer of horses and former president of the Lewis County Fair, passed away on February 11, 1985.


In 1960 Maxine and her sister in law, Waneta Jones, purchased the “Village Café” in Turin. Maxine and Waneta operated this restaurant for 25 years, during which time the business became a premier restaurant in the North Country. In 1985, Mrs. Galarneau began her employment as a bus driver for the handicapped and disabled for Lewis County ARC and Birnie Bus Service, an occupation that continued for 24 years until her retirement. It was Maxine’s pleasure to help people and she looked forward to her bus driving employment every day.


She is survived by her four children: Edward, Turin, Debra and husband, Robert Bosco, Glenfield, Janet and husband, David Twining, Maryland and Brian and his wife, Linda, Turin. She was predeceased by a son, Timothy and by a grandson, Dawson Twining. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and one sister, Phyllis Edick, Lowville. Maxine was predeceased by a brother, Royal Edick and sisters, Dorothy Cyr, Eleanor Reed and a twin sister, Marlene Stewart. Maxine’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt expression of many thanks to her companion of many years, Lyle Carlise, who afforded Maxine wonderful care.


In keeping with Maxine’s wishes, services will be held privately at the convenience of her family at Turin Cemetery and there are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Turin Volunteer Fire Company Inc., or to Turin Ambulance Fund, both North Main Street, Turin, NY 13473, or to the Turin United Methodist Church, P.O. box 9, Turin, NY 13473. Her arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville.
