Oneonta- Mavis (Evans) York, 72, wife of Ronald, a former resident of Kelpy Town near Port Leyden, passed away at her residence at Mountain Vista Drive, Oneonta, NY on Monday, October 31, 2011. She was born in DeKalb Junction, NY (St. Lawrence Co.) on April 12, 1939, a daughter of George G. and Vivian Reed Evans. Mavis grew up in Dekalb Jct, moving to the Lyons Falls area as a child. She graduated from Lyons Falls Central School, later attending B.O.C.E.S. in Glenfield, where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. After that she was employed as a nurse for more than eightteen years, first at Lewis Co. Extended Care Facility, Lowville, at Sunset Nursing Home, Boonville, and at Stonehedge Nursing Home, Rome. During this time she also attended Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica, where she graduated with an associates degree in Human Services Administration. She completed her formal education by graduating from SUNY at Utica and Rome, earning a Bachelor Degree in Health Care Management. In 1984, Mrs. York accepted the postion of head administrator of the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, an elder care and assisted living facility in Cooperstown. She retired in 1992, when the couple moved to their present home near Oneonta. On April 25, 1959, Mavis was united in marriage with Ronald L. York, at Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls. Mrs. York was a past board member of The Family Resource Network, Inc., Oneonta, and a former V.P. and member of the American Liver Foundation, Syracuse. In addition to her husband, Ronald, she is survived by two sons, Griffith A. (Carly) York, New Castle, PA, David P. (Debra) York, Cherry Valley, NY; one daughter, Linda L. (Roger A.) Richards, Oneonta; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; one sister, Nancy(Ronald) Graves, Rome; three brothers, David (Linda) Evans, FLA, Max (Pat) Evans, Massena, and William Evans, Rome. Her Funeral Services are Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Pastor James Pegan, of the Boonville United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Turin Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday 6-8 P.M. and Saturday from 9 A.M. until the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to a hospice organization of your choice.
