~~ Port Leyden - Mary (Skorupa) Hartness, 100, widow of Thomas C., passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, while surrounded by the loving care of her family and staff at Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Boonville where she had resided since 2013. Mary was born on November 7, 1916, near Rome, at Lee Valley, a daughter of Michael J. and Mary Dorish Skorupa. She moved to Highmarket with her family where Mary attended a rural school. Later she boarded with a family in Lowville, while attending and graduating from Lowville Academy and Central School. On July 17, 1937, Mary was united with marriage with Thomas C. Hartness, at the home of the bride, at Highmarket. Thereafter the couple lived in Constableville, before moving to Elm St. Port Leyden, where they lived for many years. Mrs. Hartness was employed at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, and as a cook at VerSchneiders Restaurant, Alder Creek, the Wax House Restaurant, Snow Ridge, Turin and at The Central Hotel, Glenfield. For many years the couple also operated a small farm in Port Leyden. Mr. Hartness, a retired paper maker at Georgia Pacific Paper Co. of Lyons Falls, passed away on April 14, 1995. Thereafter, for 18 years, Mary resided at Whitton Place Apartments, Port Leyden, before moving to Sunset, in Boonville, in 2013. Mrs. Hartness was a member of St. Martins Church, Port Leyden, and a member of St. Martins Altar and Rosary Society. For many years she greatly enjoyed playing Bingo. Mary is survived by her children: Richard (Carol) Hartness, Brantingham, Mary Alger, Town of Western, Catherine (Andrew) Millick, Port Leyden, Margaret Fletcher, Indianapolis, IN, Carolyn (Randy) Podkowka, Port Leyden, Virginia (Carroll) Owens, Chases Lake, Paul (Charlotte) Hartness, Utica, Theresa (Phil) LoGalbo, Lowell and Karen (Kevin) Ogden, North Carolina. She was predeceased by a daughter, Anne, in 1996 and by a daughter, Mary Rosa, who died as an infant. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by a grandson, Richard Alger, in 1988. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Charbonneau, Edmond, OK and Mrs. Barbara Arabas, Long Valley, NJ. Mary was predeceased by five sisters, Helen, Katherine, Rose Earl, Ann Dowling, and Josephine, and by brothers, Frank, Paul and David Skorupa. Marys family extends a note of heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the B wing staff and other staff of Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, for the excellent care and compassion extended to Mary. A Prayer Service will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 at 9:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. Martins Church, Port Leyden, with Rev. Lawrence Marullo officiating. Interment will follow in St. Josephs Cemetery, Boonville. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
