Utica- Mary Donowick Olin, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville. Mary was born in Utica on March 27, 1923, to Michael Donowick and Katherine Klaczko Donowick. Mary grew up in Utica, graduating from Proctor High School with the Class of 1941. Following completion of the nursing program at University of Rochester, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Army. She completed her basic training at Fort Dix, NJ. Mary served in the India - Burma Theater of WWII, stationed at the 100th Station Hospital. On March 14, 1946, she was honorably discharged at Ft. Dix Army Separation Center, with the rank of 2ond Lieutenant. After serving her country, Mrs. Olin, earned her bachelor's degree from Utica College and was later employed at Utica State Hospital as a registered psychiatric nurse. In 1947, Mary was united in marriage with Raymond G. Olin. The couple was married for 57 years, until Mr. Olin's passing in 2004. Mary is predeceased by her parents, eight siblings and a granddaughter Summer Abele. She is survived by her daughter Mara and son in law, Emmet Abele, grandchildren, Mary Katherine and Rick Mathis, Jeremy Britton and Brittany Jackson and Blake Abele; three great grandchildren, sister Judy Rockwood and special nieces Beth Rockwood, Utica, Judy Pearson, Watertown and Kathy Brusgard, state of Maryland. Mary enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Mary was an amazing person and a true member of our nation's "greatest generation." She will forever be loved and missed. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their professional, loving and compassionate care. Mary will be buried with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
