BOONVILLE - Mary A. Beck, of Golden Road, passed away at her home on April 24, 2016, surrounded by family. Mary was born on April 14, 1937, daughter of Martin Webster Beck and Luella Sullivan Beck. She grew up in Lyonsdale where she attended the Lyonsdale Rural School. She graduated from Port Leyden High School with the class of 1954. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in teaching with a Registered Nursing degree from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1958. While teaching in the Westchester County area, Mary attended and graduated from Columbia University with a Master's degree in nursing in 1965. During her career that spanned 35 years, Mary was a Nurse Teacher at schools in Rye, N.Y., a Health Teacher in Bedford Schools and lastly a Nurse Teacher at Chappaqua Schools in Westchester County. During her teaching career, she lived on the west side of Manhattan near Lincoln Center until retiring in 1992; returning upstate and residing in Port Leyden. In 1997, she constructed and moved into her present home in Boonville. Mary was a member of New York State United Teachers, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Metropolitan Opera House, New York Botanical Gardens and Glimmerglass Opera. She was an avid art collector, world traveler and classical music aficionado. She enjoyed gardening, communing with nature, the NY Mets and cats. She is survived by her sister Thelma Beck Kirch, nieces Michele and Laura, nephews Charles, Martin and Patrick and numerous cousins. In lieu of funeral services, a private memorial gathering for family and friends will be held in the near future.
