Marion H. Mcdermott

Remsen- Marion H. McDermott, 85, devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, died on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at home. Marion was the daughter of Louis and Maria Mattingly Hemrich, of Jasper County, IL. She was educated in IL state schools, taught elementary level students for two years during WWII, employed by Norris Electric Power Corp, in Newton, IL, where she met her husband, Michael. In 1959, her family moved to Remsen, she was employed by Mohawk Airlines for eight years, and later as an executive secretary at Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co., Utica, for fifteen years, retiring in 1986. Mrs. McDermott was a very active member of St. Patrick's Church, Forestport. She served her church family and community as a long time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Women's Club, and teaching religious education. Marion was a very creative person, a talent she expressed through making Altar cloths, and banners for St. Patrick's, and crafts for bazaars. She greatly enjoyed gardening and writing. She served as Cub Scout Den Mother and other memberships included Remsen-Steuben Historical Society and a member of Remsen XYZ Senior Citizens. Marion was the author of ABUNDANT HARVEST, a history of St. Patrick' s Church, Forestport, published in 1991. Her original acrylic paintings and a collection of "THOUGHTS ON THINGS" and children's stories are enjoyed by family and friends. Surviving are two sons, Michael B. McDermott and wife, Terri, Sedalia, MO, Timothy McDermott, and wife, Gerry, Palm Bay, FL, one daughter, Mary E. Jenny, and husband, James, Remsen; five grandchildren, Jessica and husband, Rob Nelson, Vernon, NY, Tara and husband Eric Orman, Duvall, WA, Timothy Jenny and wife, Colleen, Michael Jenny and wife, Jen, all of Remsen, and Colleen Jenny, and fiance John Miller, Glenville, NY, great grandchildren, Joshua Nelson, Ella Marie, Rylan, and Ruby Orman, and Trent Jenny. Also surviving is a special sister in law, Lydia B. Hemrich, Effingham, IL, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael, of 58 years, on July 11, 2007, two sons, Christopher who died as an infant, and Kevin G. on March 12, 2006, by a sister, Thelma Kraus, and by two brothers, Louis M. Hemrich and J. Bernard Hemrich. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick's Church, Forestport, with interment to follow at Fair Child Cemetery, Remsen. There are no calling hours.
