Boonville- Lyle W. Thompson, 83, of Boonville Road, husband of Norma, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014, after a short illness, at Up State Medical University Hospital, Syracuse. He was born in Artesian, SD on January 17, 1931, a son of John E. and Nora Cox Thompson. Lyle grew up in Fedora, SD where he graduated from high school and after that he attended college. In 1951, Mr. Thompson joined the U.S. Navy, serving his country for six years before joining the U.S. Air Force, where he served until his honorable discharge and retirement in 1971 as a System Control Technician for the Air Force at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome. On May 22, 1954, Lyle was united in marriage with Norma A. Hammond at Olathe Kansas. This was a loving union that endured for nearly 60 years. The Thompsons' lived in Boonville for a short time before Mr. Thompson retired from the Air Force and they decided this area was where they would eventually return. They moved to St. Charles, Illinois, where he was employed by GTE Communications Systems at Northlake, Il. In 1986, he retired from GTE; in 1987, he and Norma returned to Boonville settling on Boonville Road (Formerly Moose River Road), where they have since lived. In 1986, their daughter, Vickie and Norma were partners in the operation of the well known "For Goodness Sake" natural food store on Main St. in Boonville. Later this store was named Adirondack Staple and Spice. Mr. Thompson enjoyed assisting in the operation of the store and was a familiar face there. During that time he was also employed at Sergeants Chair Factory of Boonville. He was a member of South Maple Methodist Church of Rapid City, SD. While living inSt. Charles IL, he was an active volunteer in their Emergency Management ( Civil Defense ) Program. He was also a member the St. Charles Moose Lodge and later a member of the Retired Enlisted Association. Lyle enjoyed doing projects around the house and yard, and spending time in the woods around their property. His favorite activity was keeping up with friends and family, especially his grand kids, on Facebook In addition to his wife, Norma, he is survived by a daughter Vickie L. Thompson, Custer SD, one son, Alan L. (Michele) Thompson, Rapid City, SD, two grandchildren, Kjerstin and Rebecca, three great grandchildren, Katie, Annabell and Abigail. Also surviving is a step son, Douglas (Pam) Moffett, Bakersfield, CA, and their families. The last of his siblings, he was predeceased by twelve brothers and sisters; Roy H. Mabel L. Fred W. Merle R. Wilma M. George A. John F. Francis J. Robert H. Laura E. Carol E. and Junior R. A visitation will be Friday from 6-8 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where a Memorial Service will be held at 8 p.m. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.
