Louis Michael Mascitelli

Boonville - Louis Michael Mascitelli, M.D., 93, of Academy Street and affectionately known as "Dr.Lou", passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. A native of New York City, he was born on July 25, 1915 to Vincenza and Angelina Mascitelli. He graduated from Syracuse University School of Medicine with the Class of 1941, and served his medical residency at St. Vincent's Hospital in NYC. For many years he was a general practitioner of medicine in the city while residing in Glen Cove, Long Island. He was married to Maria Kappler who predeceased him. In 1974 he moved to Utica and practiced at St. Elizabeth's Hospital Emergency Room; he later became Director of Emergency Medicine at Faxton Hospital in Utica, where he also treated patients at outlying medical clinics. Dr. Mascitelli retired and moved to Boonville in 1989. On February 17, 1987, Dr. Mascitelli was married to Virginia Williams in Myrtle Beach, SC, a favorite vacation destination where they made many friends. He was a member of the American Medical Association and attended Boonville United Methodist Church. He greatly enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano. His love of gardening and a perfect lawn was his forte and admired by many. The couple also enjoyed traveling, a highlight of their travels being a tour of Europe. In addition to his wife, Virginia, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Michael McLeod of Longmont, CO; three grandchildren, Dylan, Sean, and Angelina; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Rose Pasi of Cresskill, NJ; five stepchildren, Roger VanLuven of MI, Patti Griffin and Pamela Ricci, both of Boonville, Kim VanLuven of FL, and Tracy Austin of Boonville; and six step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter, Dona Murphy, on August 4, 2003; a stepson, Kevin VanLuven of FL; three brothers, Tom, Domenic, and Vincent; and a sister, Fannie Comerci. His family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Ira Tisch, Jonie, and the staff of Nephrology Associates, Utica, Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, St. Elizabeth Medical Center and the Boonville Fire Company Ambulance for their care and compassion. His funeral will be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, where Rev. William A. Mudge will officiate. Interment will be in Boonville Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
