West Leyden- Leslie L. Fey, 84, of Osceola Road, husband of Mitzi, passed away peacefully at his residence, with his loving wife and family by his side, on Friday, January 24, 2020. Affectionately known as Les, he was born on August 23, 1935, a son of Lester C. and Florence Mowers Fey, at the Fey family homestead, near West Leyden. He graduated from West Leyden Central High School, with the Class of 1954. While in high school, Les excelled at playing soccer, baseball and especially basketball. He also participated in the High School Chorus and continued to be known for his singing abilities throughout his life. After graduation, Mr. Fey enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country stateside and in Germany, during the Korean Conflict, until his honorable discharge with rank of PFC, on June 9, 1956. After concluding his military service, Les returned to West Leyden, where he joined the family lumber business with his father, Lester and brother, Norman. In 1906, Leslie and Norman's grandfather, Jacob Fey, of West Leyden, founded The Fey Lumber and Carpentry business, constructing many post and beam buildings in the West Leyden area. Later Jacob's son, Lester Fey joined in the operation of the business. Many years ago Leslie and his brother, Norman, expanded Fey Manufacturing Co., into a business that has become renowned throughout the Northeastern United States for its fine handcrafted hardwood furniture. Les was known for his specialty in designing and crafting beautiful furniture and cabinetry. He was a true artist with wood. On January 28, 1961, Leslie was united in marriage to Mildred Mumford, of Rome, NY. This was a blessed union of 59 years. Leslie was a member of the West Leyden Reformed Church, where he served on the Consistory Board. He was a life member of the V.F.W. of Champlain, NY, and a member of Charles J. Love Post # 406, American Legion, Boonville, and a member of the West Leyden Cemetery Association. Les especially loved spending time with his loving wife and family. He enjoyed working with wood, researching the family genealogy, reading, singing, watching Syracuse University Basketball Games, Yankees Baseball games and taking care of his home and yard. Les was a people person, who throughout his life always strove to follow biblical teachings and "to love his neighbor." Over the years he enjoyed many friendships, always taking the time to visit with people. Les was loved by many and he will be greatly missed. Leslie is survived by his loving wife, Mildred (Mitzi) Fey and his four children and their spouses: Laurie and Norbert Hardt of Lempster, NH, Shelly and Duane Gilmour, Sherrill, NY, Julie and Robert Kraeger, Constableville, NY, and Leslie and Jacqueline Fey, Nantucket, MA; eleven grandchildren: Erich, Kevin and Steven Hardt; Anna, Julia, and Alex Gilmour; Nicholas Kraeger; and Ethan, Jillian, Gavin and Evelyn Fey. Also surviving are his brother and sister in law, Norman and Otilla Fey, West Leyden and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by a sister, Betty Campbell. Leslie's Funeral will be Friday, January 31, 2020, at 5:00 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where calling hours will be Friday from 1 P.M. until the services at the funeral home.
