Forestport- Leola (Scouten) Schmelzle, 90, a resident of River Street for 60 years, passed away at her residence on March 26, 2010 while surrounded by the love and care of her family. She was born on the Bethel Road near Remsen on August 2, 1919, a daughter of Albert and Dorothy (Ingersoll) Scouten. She received her education at the Bethel Road rural school before graduating from Remsen High School. On October 29, 1940, Leola was united in marriage with Harold E. Schmelzle, in Utica. This was a blessed union lasting over 60 years, until he passed away on October 21, 2001. For several years she was employed as a machine operator in the manufacturing of fishing tackle at Rome Specialty Company of Forestport. Leola was a member of the Forestport Presbyterian Church,. She greatly enjoyed caring for her family, cooking, baking and watching animals from her home. She is survived by three sons, Harold "Smokey" and his wife, Kathy of Forestport, and twins Ronald of Forestport and Royal and his wife, Amelida of Citrus Springs, FL; a daughter, Eleanor Marriott and her dear friend, "Bear" Marlow of Forestport; several grandchildren and great- grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and two very close and special friends, Terry Larkin and Harold Moon, both of Forestport. Leola was predeceased by a brother, Donald J. "Pete" Scouten, a sister, Lucille Lehowicz, and her daughter-in-law, Sylvia A. in 2001. She dearly loved her cat, Bessie, and her dog, Budweiser. Her funeral service will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street, Boonville, where Pastor Ann Reynolds of the Forestport Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Forestport. Calling hours are Sunday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
