Laurie S. Capron

March 7, 1947 — February 17, 2021

Boonville- On Wednesday, February 17, 2021, Laurie S. Capron, wife and mother of two, passed away from complications of a stroke at the age of 73. Laurie was born on March 7, 1947 in Albany, NY to Joseph and Marjorie Smith. She lived in Albany until age 5 when the family moved to Madison, NY. Three years later, another move brought the Smith family to Boonville. Laurie would live in Boonville for the rest of her life. She graduated from Boonville Central School with the class of 1965. Laurie spent over 50 years of her working life as a meat cutter. She began working at the Foodland market in Boonville shortly after high school. For a time she had the distinction of being the only female head meat cutter in New York State. Her "famous" hot sausage was popular in the Boonville area. After 34 years of service, Laurie continued her profession at the Big M Market and then at the Tops Friendly Market of Boonville. She retired in 2020. No one could outwork Laurie. She was strong, competent and tough as nails. However, most of her customers will remember her for her friendly demeanor and the care she took in filling special orders. Laurie had a strong community spirit as well. Many male Boonville natives will recall being in her Cub Scout Den, earning badges and completing projects in George's basement. She helped out with the early Snow Festivals and the Woodsmen's Field Days as well. Her volunteerism was also a large part of her life as a member of the Elks. She helped with the Elk's Walk for Life and was involved in creating the Haunted Trail. She was known as the "Flower Lady", spending hours of her time bringing the Elk's flower beds to life. In 2007, she was named Elk of the Year. She even earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from Barrack Obama for serving the public so well for so long. Laurie loved her gardens and her books, but she also enjoyed traveling. She and her family enjoyed the coast of Maine. However, nothing was better than hopping on a plane to Colorado to see the girls. Laurie married George William Capron on November 18, 1967 in St. Joseph's Church in Boonville. She is survived by her two sons, Daniel Capron and Leisa Murphy of Newport NY and Christopher Capron and his wife Rene of Centennial, CO; her three grandchildren, Kennedy, Reagan and Kiera, her sisters, Sharon Belyea of Boonville and Licia Mackey of Glens Falls.
