Lafayette M 'Bud' Sykes

Woodgate- LaFayette M. Sykes, 80, husband of Margaret, affectionately known as "Bud," passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017 in the comfort of his home. LaFayette was born on September 29, 1936 a son of Horatio B. and Ida Sherman Sykes. He was raised in the Town of Steuben, and attended Holland Patent Schools. Bud then joined the US Army, serving until his honorable discharge in 1958. On December 14, 1975, LaFayette was united in marriage with Margaret Crumrine in Stittville. The couple moved to Woodgate in 1986, and had just celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary. Bud was a retired highway supervisor for the New York State Dept. of Transportation, Utica. Bud's love of the New York Yankees, led him to be an umpire and coach for several area youth leagues. He enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling, and was previously the President of the Trackside Blazers Snowmobile Club. The family will always cherish the memories of their annual trips to Walt Disney World, and if you knew Bud, you knew his love for Mickey Mouse. Besides his wife Margaret, Bud is survived by his children: Lauren (Chris) Melton, Hopkinton, MA, Karen (Brian) Bontemps, Monroe, NY, stepchildren: Rebecca (Bill) McGough, Woodgate, Eric Sutherland, Inlet, and 14 precious grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother Sherman (Maureen) Sykes, Underwood, IN, sisters-in-law: Barbara Sykes, Boonville, Melissa (Ed) VanNamee, Vernon Center, Barbara (Don) Wynkoop, Cato, NY, his former wife and friend Joan Sykes, Clinton, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, William, daughter, Sheree, and a brother Horatio Sykes. Proudly, Bud has donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 19, at 11:00 am at the Boonville United Methodist Church, where Pastor Denise Bowen will officiate. Arrangements are in care of the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodgate Volunteer Fire Dept. 12445 State Route 28, Woodgate, NY 13494, or to the Boonville United Methodist Church, 105 Ann St. Boonville, NY 13309.
