Boonville- Kenneth W. Vigus, 70, of Pine Lane, husband of Rhonda, passed away at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, New Hartford, on Saturday, March 25, 2017, after a courageous and hard fought battle with leukemia. For many years, Ken and Rhonda were residents of Schuyler St. before moving to Pine Lane in 2013. Ken was born in Troy, on March 13, 1947, a son of Clifton and Violet Marie Hollingsworth Vigus. He grew up in Averill Park, where he graduated from high school, with the Class of 1965. In 1966, Ken entered the U.S. Airforce, stationed stateside and in Korea, during the Viet Nam War era, serving his country until he was honorably discharged in 1970. He returned to the Troy area, where he was employed as a Rural Route mail carrier for Averill Park Post Office. From 1978, until his retirement as Assistant Chief, in 1997, Mr. Vigus was employed as a professional firefighter at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome. While employed as a firefighter, Mr. Vigus furthered his education at Corning Community College, Corning, NY, where he earned an Associate Degree in Firefighting. In 1978, he moved to Boonville, where he later met the love of his life, Rhonda Jones Jago; Rhonda and Ken were married on January 21, 1984, at the Dodge Pratt Art & Community Center, Boonville. This was a loving union which endured for 33 years. After retiring from Griffiss Airforce Base, Ken was employed as a clerk at Aubachon Hardware Store, Boonville, and also at Walmart in Lowville. Ken developed a great interest and love of the Tug Hill Region of New York State. On October 24, 2002, he was appointed by Governor George E. Pataki to serve on the Tug Hill Commission. On December 3, 2004, he was elected Vice Chairman and on November 28, 2006, Mr. Vigus was elected Chairman of the commission, serving in that position until December 10, 2008. He was currently a member of the commission, marking over 14 years of service to the Tug Hill Region. He greatly enjoyed hunting on the Tug Hill Plateau, where he was a member and currently president of Horse Shoe Hunting Club. At the present time, Ken was a member of the Boonville Zoning Board of Appeals and had previously served on the Boonville Town Planning Board. Ken was a member of Charles J. Love Post # 406, American Legion, Boonville. He greatly enjoyed reading, trains and railroad history and Civil War History. In addition to his loving wife, Rhonda, Ken is survived by his step daughters; Elaine (Doug) Hasty, Sherrill, Tonya Jago Brown and Adam Daktor, Forestport; and his son, Kenneth Scott, (Colleen), Scotia, NY; grandchildren, Zane & Wyatt Hasty, Jack Daktor, Gabriella (Daniel) Cieszynski, Alexandria and Nicholas and two great granddaughters. Visitation hours will be at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, on Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M., where a Memorial Service will be held immediately after. Interment will follow in Boonville Cemetery, where members of Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and Tun Tavern Marine Corps League will provide Military Honors.
