Kathleen A. Mooney Schmelzle

April 23, 1954 — December 11, 2022

Forestport – Kathleen A. Schmelzle, 68, of River St., wife of Harold L., passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, December 11, 2022.


She was born on April 23, 1954 in Utica, New York, a daughter of Walter and Rose Mary Brown Koperda. She began her education at New Hartford Schools, completing her education at Adirondack Central School. On October 14, 1972, Kathy was married to Frank A. Mooney, together the couple had two children Melissa and Shane. Mr. Mooney, a US Army veteran, and machinist at Jet Sew, Barneveld, passed away on July 26, 1999.


On June 23, 2004, Kathy was married to Harold L. “Smokey” Schmelzle in Forestport. Together the couple enjoyed many trips to their camp on Black Lake, where they enjoyed boating, and the many friends that they made along the lake. After completing the previous clerks term, in 2000 Mrs. Schmelzle was elected as the Town of Forestport Clerk, and served for a total of 13 years. She was proud of her community service in this capacity and enjoyed all of the people she helped through the years.


Kathy is survived by her husband Harold, daughter Melissa Humble (John Yager), son Shane Mooney, daughter Kim Thorne, all of Forestport, grandchildren: Aaron, Meaghan, Aiden, and Shelby, great-grandchildren: Braydon, Abrielle, and Harper, sister Diana (Dale) White, Forestport, sister-in-law: Jean Mooney, Forestport, sister-in-law Patricia (Donnie) Evans, Alder Creek, daughter-in-law: Lorrie Schmelzle. She was predeceased by her son Wayne Schmelzle, son-in-law Dana Humble, grandson Francis Humble, and brother Walter Koperda, Jr..


Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 16, at 11:00 am at St. Patrick’s Church, Forestport, with Rev. Matthew Rawson, pastor officiating. Interment will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 15, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Forestport Fire Fighters, Inc. 11965 River Road, Forestport, New York 13338.
