Port Leyden- Judith A. Wheeler, 71, of Canal St., wife of Henry R. passed away at her residence, on Monday, January 8, 2017, while surrounded by the loving care of her husband, family and hospice. Affectionately known as Judy, she was born in Lowville, on May 28, 1946, a daughter of Leonard and Frances Sabourin Janes. She grew up in Port Leyden, where she received her education and graduated from Port Leyden Central School, with the Class of 1964. Thereafter, Judy furthered her education at Center City Business Institute, where she received an Associates Degree in Business, graduating with the Class of 1965. On June 11, 1966, Judy was united in marriage with Henry R. Wheeler, at St. Martins Church, Port Leyden. Thereafter the couple lived in Syracuse until 1973, when they returned to Port Leyden, since residing on Canal St. Mrs. Wheeler was first employed as a representative at Baches Co. Stock Exchange of Syracuse. After returning to Port Leyden, she was employed in the business office at South Lewis Central School, Turin, for over thirty seven years, retiring in July, 2011. Judy was a member of St. Martins Church, Port Leyden, where for many years she was an active member of St. Martins Altar & Rosary Society and she continued serving others in her community with a 44 year membership in the J.S. Koster Hose Co., Port Leyden Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. For over twenty years, Judy was a member of NYSUT, where she was president of that union for over 20 years. Judy possessed a great affection for her community and enjoyed many years of service to her community. Judy was an active member of Port Leyden Central School, Parent Teachers Association and she served on the Port Leyden Recreation Board, on the committee to construct the Port Leyden Community Swimming Pool. She was a member of Port Leyden Central School Alumni Association. Judy greatly loved her husband, children, family and many friends. In addition to her husband, Henry, Judy is survived by three children; Melisa (Scott) Eastman, Jonathan (Jody) Wheeler, and Shannon (Rob) Carpenter, all of Boonville; seven grandchildren, Tyler, Brad, Emily, Joshua, Justin, Jolene and Eric, three great grandchildren; Alayna, Trenton and Maxwell; her mother, Frances Janes, a resident at Lewis County Extended Care Facility, Lowville; two sisters, Rebecca (Dan) Mullen, Concord, NH, Susan (Ron) Rockwood, Lowville, and many nieces and nephews. Judy was predeceased by her father, Leonard Janes, in 1997 and by two brothers, Douglas Janes and William Janes. Her Funeral will be on Saturday at 9:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, and 10:00 A.M. at St. Martins Church, Port Leyden, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo, pastor, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in the spring, in Calvary Cemetery, Port Leyden. Calling hours are Friday 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
