Syracuse - Joyce T. Cavanagh, 78, a native and lifelong resident of Syracuse, passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, NY, after a brief illness. Joyce was born on September 13, 1931, the daughter of Reginald A. and Florence M. (Tetreault) Cavanagh. She graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy in 1949, and received her Bachelorï¿(TM)s Degree from SUNY Cortland in 1953. She received her Master of Arts Degree in 1958, her Master of Science Degree in 1962, and completed additional graduate studies, all at Syracuse University. Miss Cavanaghï¿(TM)s teaching career spanned a period of thirty-eight years at East Syracuse-Minoa Schools, including nine years as a physical education teacher and twenty-seven years as a guidance counselor. She was an active member of Our Lady of Solace Church and Our Lady of Lourdes Church, both of Syracuse. Joyce was an avid golfer and was widely known for her excellent golfing skills. She was a longtime member of the Drumlins Golf Club and Country Club, and the Nottingham Knolls Country Club, where she was Womenï¿(TM)s Club Four Time Champion. She was currently a member of the Drumlins East Golf Club, and was a twenty-five year member of the Syracuse Womenï¿(TM)s District Golf Association. She was a former member of the Pompey Golf Club, the Cazenovia Country Club, and the Rogers Roguesï¿(TM) Golf Club. She was a member and past president of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, NYS Retired Teachers Association, NYS United Teachers Association, Onondaga County Association of NYSUT Retired Teachers, and the East Syracuse-Minona Teachers Association. Joyce was listed in "Whoï¿(TM)s Who of American Women" and "Whoï¿(TM)s Who of the East". Miss Cavanagh is survived by many cousins, including Christina M. Henry of Boonville; members of the Henry and Moonan families and cousins in the Utica area; a host of wonderful friends; and her beloved dogs, Kattie, Abbey and Taragh. Her family expresses heartfelt appreciation to her many friends for their love and support during her illness, and to the staff at Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, especially C-wing. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, August 11, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Valley Drive, Syracuse, where friends may also call from 10-11 a.m. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at St. Josephï¿(TM)s Cemetery, Boonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Sunset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Resident Activities Fund, 232 Academy Street, Boonville, NY 13309.
