Josephine 'Jo' Skorupa

Port Leyden- Josephine "Jo" Skorupa, R.N. 90, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, after a brief illness. Affectionately known as Jo, she was born on October 4, 1924, on the Skorupa Homestead Farm in Highmarket, a daughter of Michael J. and Mary E. Dorish Skorupa. She grew up in Highmarket, until 1939, when her family moved to the village of Constableville, where she graduated from high school, with the Class of 1943. After that Jo furthered her education by attending and graduating from the Mercy School of Nursing, Watertown, where she earned her Registered Nurse degree. For many years thereafter she was employed as a surgical nurse at Faxton Hospital, Utica. Later for 30 years, she was employed in the same capacity for Drs. G.E. Kelley, F.J. Kroboth and L.C. Lee of Utica, retiring in 1989, when she moved from Whitesboro to her present home in Port Leyden. The very heart of Jo's life was in helping anyone in need. Through her love of nursing and the practice of her Catholic Faith, Jo strengthened and brightened the lives of all who encountered her. She was a member of St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden, and St. Martin's Altar & Rosary Society, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses, Inc. Jo greatly loved her family and many friends. She is survived by three sisters and one brother in law, Mary E. Hartness, Boonville, Ruth Charbonneau, Edmond, Ok, and Barbara (Paul) Arabas, Long Valley, NJ, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, in 1975, Paul, in 1980 and Joseph, in 1986; and by four sisters, Katherine, in 1996, Helen A. in 2001, Rose Earl, in 2012 and Ann V. Dowling, in 2010. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 12 Noon at St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Constableville. Calling hours are Monday 9-11 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
