Westernville- Joseph A. Mierek, Jr. 74, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, while in the care of his loving family and hospice. He was born in Utica, on March 7, 1938, a son of Joseph A. and Kunegunda (Kinga) Stolarczyk Mierek, Sr. He moved to the Carmichael Hill area with his family where he grew up on the Mierek Homestead Farm. He attended Holland Patent School, graduating with the Class of 1956, and graudated from MVCC, in 1958, where he earned his associates degree. Later he was employed in manufacturing in Rome, before enrolling at SUNY IT where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Thereafter Mr. Mierek was employed for many years as a design technician in highway construction for the Department of Transportation at Syracuse. On September 27, 1969, Mr. Mierek was married to Virginia L. Evans, at the Westernville Presbyterian Manse. After their marriage the couple constructed their present home on Carmichael Hill. Mr. Mierek was a former member of Transfiguration Church, Rome, and for many years he enjoyed his passion as a licensed air craft pilot. In addition to his wife, Virginia, he is survived by his children and their spouses: Vincent R. (MerryEllen) Holland Patent, Lucinda J. Mierek, Anderson, SC, LeAnn M. (David) Mogensen, Holland Patent, Grace A. (Wayne) Farr, Remsen, Christopher J.(Natalie) Mierek, Puyallup, WA, Cathryn P. Mierek, and Jeramiah Vanhatten, Holland Patent; fourteen grandchildren, one great grandchildren; two brothers, George (Barbara) Mierek, and Thomas Mierek, both of Westernville; three sisters, Annette Waterman, Westernville, Christine (Maynard) Anken, Steuben, and Maria (Joseph) Fazekas, Westernville; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at Transfiguration Church, Ridge St. Rome, on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. where Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio will officiate. Interment will follow in Westernville Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
