John W. Karlen

Blossvale- John W. Karlen, 65, of Eckel Road, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, while surrounded by the loving care of his wife, Mary. John was born in Boonville, on March 26, 1951, a son of Howard C. and Mildred Dolan Karlen. He received his early education at Boonville Central School. For many years John was employed in patient care at Rome DDSO. John's great love in life was farming; from 1971 until recently, he was involved in dairy farming and raising young and dry stock; for many years he and wife, Mary, operated the Karlen Farm in Blossvale. On July 29, 1989, John was united in marriage with Mary L. Hartnett, at Immaculate Conception Church, Pompey, NY. This was a loving union which endured for twenty seven and one half years. Mr. Karlen was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Taberg. John had a lifelong interest and enjoyment in cooking, trapping and hunting. In later years he enjoyed his many Amish friendships. In addition to his wife, Mary, John is survived by one brother, Rev. Donald H. Karlen and a sister and brother in law, Nancy and Richard Goodhines, Ava. He was predeceased by his parents and by a brother, James Dolan. Also surviving are brothers in law, William Hartnett, Fair Haven, James (Alma) Hartnett, John Hartnett and Michael Hartnett, all of Pompey; sisters in law, Catherine Robison, Coldspring, Texas, Edna (David) Horton, Altmar and Rosemary Dolan, Boonville, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. A prayer service will be Friday at 10:15 A.M. at Prince-Boyd and Hyatt Funeral Home, Inc. 210 West Court St. Rome, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter's Church, Rome, where John's brother, Rev. Donald H. Karlen, will be principal celebrant. Interment will be in the spring, at Boonville Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
