Remsen – John R. Jones, Jr., 86, husband of Linda, longtime resident of French Road, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Wynn Hospital, Utica.
Affectionately known as Jack or Jonesy, he was born on August 4, 1937 in Utica, New York a son of John R. and Helen Benson Jones. John was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. A “jack of all trades”, John did a number of things through the years. For a time, he tended bar at the Pub in Boonville, and was also an iron worker on the bridge at Niagara Falls. In the early 1960’s Jack began his longtime employment with United Parcel Service. He started out as a local package deliveryman, eventually driving tractor trailer in the warehouse delivery division. He retired from UPS after over 34 years of service.
On January 31, 1976, John was united in marriage with Linda Webster Ossont in West Leyden, NY. Initially the couple settled in Clinton, before constructing their home on French Road, where they raised their children and have since lived.
Jack enjoyed outdoor activities including hunting, camping and snowmobiling. He also had fun bowling and was a participant in the Barneveld bowling leagues for many years. His memberships also included Utica Maennerchor and the Whitesboro V.F.W. #1113 Sons of the American Legion.
Besides Linda, his wife of 48 years, Jack is survived by his children from his previous marriage to Penny Millicent Farrington: Mary Jones, Remsen, Denise Jones Smith, Michigan. Richard (Colleen) Jones, Colorado, Helen Jones, Utica, as well as his daughters: Kristina Ossont Sutherland, Forestport, and Judith Ossont Smith, Remsen, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, which include his special granddaughter Renee Amicucci and great-grandchildren Brooke and Wyatt. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Ceceil Jones, Clinton, Judy Jones, Sylvan Beach, and daughter-in-law Lea Ossont, Barneveld. Jack also leaves behind his special felines: Lucky (Whom adopted him) and Bindi.
He was predeceased by his sons: Steven Jones and James Ossont, sons-in-law: Al Smith and Dan Sutherland, and brothers: Robert and James Jones.
