John R. Hurlbut

John R. "Dutch" Hurlbut, Jr., 74, of Potato Hill Road, formerly of Old Forge, husband of Emily Hurlbut, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital, New Hartford. John was born in Old Forge on April 30, 1932 a son of John R. and Margaret Plappert Hurlbut. He grew up in Old Forge, attending Town of Webb School. On June 2, 1951 he was united in marriage with Emily Kolenda at St. Bartholomewï¿(TM)s Church, Old Forge. For many years the couple lived on Park Ave., Old Forge. After his fatherï¿(TM)s death, John operated the family business, Central Adirondack Electric Co., a complete electrical, heating and plumbing business. In 1964 he and his family moved to Yakutat, Alaska, where he was employed with the Federal Aviation Administration in plumbing, heating and electrical maintenance. They later returned to Old Forge and he was employed for 20 years at the Bostwick Estate as the Superintendent, retiring in 1982. For eight years he and his wife managed the Calumet Yacht Club on Calumet Island, located on the St. Lawrence River, near Clayton, NY., retiring in 1993. The Hurlbuts moved to White Lake in 1984, and in 1985 they moved to their present home on Potato Hill Road. Mr. Hurlbut was a 35 year member of the Old Forge Fire Dept., and had served as President and Captain and was one of the first trained EMT staff for the fire dept. ambulance service. He attended St. Maryï¿(TM)s Church, West Leyden. In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Bernard (Carol Ann) Smith, Susan Marie Alderson, both of Delmar, and Mrs. Randy (Dianne Elizabeth) Kull of Old Forge, three grandchildren; Jennifer Smith, Michael Smith, Damon Kull, and one sister; Rosemary Louise Kinney of Whitesboro. He was predeceased by a sister, Kathleeen Ann Kopp in 1982. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at St. Maryï¿(TM)s Church, West Leyden, where Rev. Lawrence Marullo will officiate. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Town of Webb Community Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 124, Old Forge, NY 13420. Arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville.
