John P. Buneo

Port Leyden, NY- John P. Buneo, 92, husband of Frances and lifelong resident of the Far View Stock Farm, East Road, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016. John was born on the Buneo Homestead Farm, East Road, on August 21, 1924, to Andrew and Kathryn Buneo. John was a graduate of Port Leyden High School with the Class of 1942. John joined the United States Army Air Force on April 23, 1943, as an aircraft mechanic working on B-29s. After a three-year duty during WWII and achieving the rank of PFC, John was honorably discharged and returned to his home in Port Leyden. There he bought and worked on his farm for over 50 years retiring in 2000. On May 29, 1948, John was united in marriage with the love of his life, Frances R. Domagala, at St. Hedwig's Catholic Church, Houseville, with Rev. Lambert Sidor, officiating. John and Frances were married for 68 wonderful years. John's other loves were his family and farming. Although farming was a full-time job, he always made time for his wife and family. Sundays were dedicated to church, family meals and outings. He was a big fan of polka music, dancing and playing his accordion and harmonica. John was very proud to share his heritage and celebrated Ukrainian customs during the Christmas and Easter Holidays, along with Frances' Polish customs with his family. He also loved to make people laugh with his quick wit and pranks and opened his home to everyone. Mr. Buneo was a member of St. Martin's Church, Port Leyden and Charles J. Love American Legion Post 406, Boonville. John is survived by his wife Frances, son Timothy, Ventura, CA; daughters Yvonne (Don), Phoenix, AZ; Donna, Utica, NY; and Amy (Lou), Victoria MN; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann, Victor, NY; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, brothers Danny and Jimmy, and sisters Olga, Omela and Helen. John was predeceased by his son Ronald P. Buneo on May 12, 2009, his parents Andrew and Kathryn and brothers, Ted, Nick, Harry and Bill and great granddaughter Emma. A Prayer Service will be on Monday, October 10, at 10:00 am at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of John's life, at 11:00 am at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Port Leyden, with Rev. Christopher Carrara officiating. Interment will be in the Wilcox Cemetery, located on the family farm, East Road, Port Leyden. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1:00-4:00 pm at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Allina Hospice Team and especially to all the angels' at the Harbor and Haven Catered Living Facility who made John's last days comfortable and peaceful.
