Uvalda, GA & Boonville – John M. Gilbert, Jr, 88, passed away in the comfort of his home on Friday, January 5, 2024 in Uvalda, Georgia, while under the loving care of his companion Norma and Hospice.
John was born on May 28, 1935 in Utica, NY a son of John M. and Mary Dougherty Gilbert. John received his primary education in a one room school house near Trenton Falls before attending Holland Patent High School. On June 1, 1952 John entered the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and USS Cimmeron during the Korean Conflict. While stationed in the Midway Islands, John received his G.E.D. He was honorably discharged on June 1, 1956 in San Diego, California as a Petty Officer 3rd Class. He continued his service in the reserves for two additional years.
On September 6, 1958, John was united in marriage with Audrey Zeigler at the Boonville, Methodist Church. The couple settled in Barneveld for a time, before moving to Dean Road where they lived for a number of years and raised their family. Following a 34 year career as a tractor trailer driver for U.P.S., Utica, NY, the couple enjoyed spending winters in Bushnell, Florida and summers on DeVoe Road, Boonville. Mrs. Gilbert passed away on June 6, 2010.
John was a member of the Charles J. Love Post #406 American Legion, the Harland J. Hennessey Post #5538 V.F.W. both of Boonville, NY, Disabled American Veterans Assn., the Boonville Methodist Church, and New Hope Methodist Church, Istachatta, FL.
He is survived by his devoted partner Norma Jean Bindley, daughters: Tammy Rogers, Kim (Fred) Baker, and Julie, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Besides his wife Audrey, he was predeceased by his infant twin brother, and a sister Ann Boswick in 2010.
In keeping with John’s wishes his remains were cremated. There are no calling hours or funeral services. He will be laid to rest in the National Cemetery of Glennville, GA. Local services will be announced at a later date.
