John E. Sanford, 84, a long time resident of East Road, husband of the late Doris Wendt Sanford, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, after a brief illness. A native of Albany, John was born on September 18, 1921, a son of Eugene B. and Evelyn Foll Sanford, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Before WWII, he was employed as a machinist at the Watervliet Arsenal. In 1942 he entered the U.S. Army Air Corp serving in the United States and in the European Theater of WWII. While in the service, John was trained in several service schools as an air craft mechanic, and he also attended Virginia Military Institute for studies in engineering. Mr. Sanford was honorably discharged from the service on February 2, 1946. Later that year he entered Champlain College in the Plattsburg barracks. Two years later he transferred to St. Lawrence University in Canton, graduating with the Class of 1950. In June of 1951, John was united in marriage with Doris Wendt Sanford in Albany, N.Y. Mrs. Sanford passed away on February 19, 2000. John attended Albany College of Pharmacy graduating in 1955 with a degree in pharmacy, becoming a registered pharmacist. He and Doris owned and operated Sanford Pharmacy in downtown Boonville, later selling the business to the late Raymond Kramer. After that Mr. Sanford taught junior high science at South Lewis School in Turin. John was a very active member of the Boonville Community, serving as a trustee of Erwin Library, and for twenty three years he served on the Boonville Municipal Commission, during that time serving more than one term of chairman. Recently John was honored with receiving the DBH Dalrymple Community Service Award for his long and dedicated service to the municipal commission. In addition to his interest in community affairs, John greatly enjoyed the out doors, and especially being in the woods. For several years he and Doris owned a camp on Otter Lake. John loved his family very much and he is survived by one daughter, and one son; Diane and husband, Hal Snyder, Stittville, Richard Sanford, and wife, Linda, Boonville, five grandchildren; Deborah Hoeve, Ohio, Aimee Travis, LaFayett, NY, John Snyder, Lake Clear, NY, Garth Sanford, Boonville, Erin Sanford, Baldwinsville, and eight great grandchildren. The Sanford family extends a sincere and heart felt expression of thanks and deep appreciation to Kay, Jan, Terri and the staff from Hospice Care. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, on FRIDAY MARCH 24, from 5-8 P.M. and on SATURDAY, MARCH 25, from 1-4 P.M. A private interment will be in Boonville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Erwin Library 104 Schuyler St. Boonville, NY, or to Boonville Fire Co.
