West Leyden – Jean E. Rauscher, 93, of State Route 26, passed away on February 12, 2025, at Wynn Hospital, Utica, following a brief illness.


Jean was born on February 17, 1931 in Rome, a daughter of Elmer and Bertha Grubel Rauscher. She was raised in West Leyden, where she was educated, graduating with the Class of 1949 from West Leyden Central School. Jean then attended Buffalo State Teachers College, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1953.


Jean was a Home Economics teacher, first in Port Leyden Central School, and then Sauquoit Valley Central School. For a time, Jean also taught in Lyman, Colorado. Following her time in Colorado she moved back to New York State and took a position as the Home Economics teacher at Royalton-Hartland Central School, Middleport, NY, retiring in 1986. In 1988 Jean moved back to West Leyden. 


An avid golfer, Jean was a longtime member of Woodgate Pines Golf Club, where she participated in the Wednesday Night Women’s and Tuesday Morning Senior Leagues. She was Club Champion for several years. Jean is a member of the Dutch Reformed Church, West Leyden.


She is survived by one sister and brother in law; Janet (James) Farrell, Ogdensburg; also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Jean was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Pribble; her brothers Ralph, Douglas and Donald, a nephew Thomas Joel Rauscher, and great-nephews: Kory and Bryan Rauscher.


In keeping with her wishes there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend graveside services in West Leyden Cemetery, in the spring, at a time and date to be announced. Memorial Contributions may be made to West Leyden Volunteer Fire Dept. P.O. Box 205, West Leyden, NY 13489 or to the Woodgate Pines PGA Junior Golf Program, P.O. Box 687, Boonville, NY 13309. Her arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
