West Leyden - Janice M. (Barnes) Stefhon, a long time resident of Osceola Road, passed away on December 27 at St. Luke's Home in New Hartford after a brief illness. She was born in Greig on October 21. 1932, a daughter of Frank and Dorothy (Jones) Barnes. Janice grew up in Glenfield, where she also attended school. Her family later lived on the Hrim farm on the Hines Road in the Town of Leyden, where her brother and sister operated a farm for several years. On May 2, 1959, Janice was united in marriage with Ralph Stefhon at the Boonville Methodist Church parsonage. In 1975, the couple along with her brother and sister, William and Thelma, moved to her present home on the Osceola Road near West Leyden. Mrs. Stefhon was of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed raising plants, playing pitch, doing crossword puzzles, listening to the music of Johnny Cash, and entertaining family and friends at her home. She is survived by four sons, William J. Stefhon and his wife, Colleen of Ava, Douglas L. Stefhon of Croghan, Russell W. Stefhon of West Leyden, and Ralph D. Stefhon and his wife, Amy of Columbia, MD; three daughters, Linda Scales and her husband, Douglas of Reading, KS, Sharon Harrington of Canastota, and Rhonda Dunn and her husband, Patrick of Columbia, MD; sixteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many close friends and neighbors; and one very close long time friend, Mary Lou Kozdra. She was predeceased by a son, James, who died as an infant, in 1964, two brothers, Lee and William Barnes, and two sisters, Dorothy Evans, who died as an infant, and Thelma Barnes. Her funeral will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler Street in Boonville, where the Rev'd William A. Mudge, pastor of the Boonville United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Norwich, NY. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral.
