Janice M. Harrington Wittner

Janice was born on August 9, 1928 in Rochester, NY and passed on October 29, 2024 while in Hospice at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany, NY. She was the daughter of Albert Merkel and Hazel (Schweickhardt) Merkel who predeceased her. She grew up in Greece, NY and went to Rochester schools. Janice married Warren “Mike” Harrington (who passed in 1986) and had 3 children: Linda Harrington, Bonnie (Jim) Tracy and John (Jessie) Harrington all of Old Forge. Janice has 4 grandchildren: Gwen Tracy, Roy (David) Tracy, Molly (Tony) Canu and Jessie Harrington. She was also blessed with 5 great grandchildren: Orrin, Marley and Keira Tracy-Deuss and Julian and Mason Canu.

Janice is also survived by her sister Carol Eichorn and 3 nieces: Barbara, Jean and Susan. Her niece Kathy passed in January 2024. She is also survived by numerous cousins, friends, and special family friends Jeff, Christopher and Stephanie Deuss as well as her doggie babies: Brownie and Bailey.

Janice later married George Wittner (who passed in 2009) and divided their time together between Old Forge and Port Charlotte, FL.

Janice enjoyed being a homemaker as well as selling Real Estate part-time for 50+ years and being a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 50 years. While married to Mike they taught Boating, Snowmobiling and Hunter Safety courses for many years in Old Forge.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life in the spring. Any donations may be made to the Old Forge Fire Department. We want to thank the Old Forge Fire Department and all the EMTs that helped her out in times of crisis over the years.
