James H. Scouten

Port Leyden- James H. Scouten, 83, of North Pearl Street, husband of Nancy, passed away at his residence, on Friday, August 23, 2024, while surrounded by the loving care of his wife, family and Hospice.


A native and life resident of Port Leyden, James was born on November 18, 1940, a son of Wesley and Mary Beck Scouten. He graduated from Port Leyden Central School, with the Class of 1959. Thereafter, from 1959, until hi honorable discharge in 1962, Mr. Scouten served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the radio department and after his training, he was stationed in Korea and in Germany.


In 1962, until his retirement 38 years hence, James began employment at Georgia Pacific Paper Company, of Lyons Falls, beginning as a paper machine operator and later working in the wood room. At the time of his retirement from Lyons Falls Pulp & Paper, Mr. Scouten was an operator of the steam plant.


On May 21, 1966, James was united in marriage with Nancy J. Poore, at the Congregational Church of Port Leyden. This year marked 58 years of a loving union.


James enjoyed a lifelong interest in hunting and fishing. He particularly enjoyed fishing in beaver ponds and also on the Salmon River. The greatest highlight of his hunting days, was a trip with several friends, on a hunt for caribou, in the far northern regions of Canada. After he retired and when not hunting or fishing, James and Nancy enjoyed taking many cruises, which included the destinations of Hawaii and Alaska.


In addition to his wife, Nancy, James is survived by son, James Jr. (Jamie); daughter, Christine; son, John (Sarah), all of Port Leyden; grandchildren, Tristan, Jackson, Rye, Zoe and Zerek and a great grandson, Ivan. He was predeceased by a brother, Mike and a sister, Catherine Satterly.


In keeping with his wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. Memorial contributions may be made to Port Leyden Fire Department Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 652, Port Leyden, NY 13433 or to Friends of Lewis County Hospice, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367. His arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., Boonville.
